The liquid stream and concentrated solids each need a planned next step, criteria, testing approach, and responsible party. Separation alone does not establish reuse, discharge, or acceptance.

On-site versus haul-off
Make each option carry its real work.
Direct haul-off may be the practical baseline for a small, brief, remote, highly variable, or severely space-constrained project. On-site processing warrants closer review when a sustained dredging scope, constrained transport, a suitable process area, and defined output pathways can support a controlled treatment operation.
Do not reduce the baseline to a truck rate
The haul-off side includes loading, transport, waiting, receiving hours, fees, material condition, testing, documentation, contingency, and the effect of interruptions on dredging production. The treatment side includes mobilization, receiving, surge capacity, process equipment, utilities, operators, water and solids management, sampling, loadout, and demobilization. A comparable estimate makes both lists visible.
Let duration carry its weight
Heavy, temporary equipment has real mobilization and demobilization cost. A short scope can be a poor fit even when separating material sounds attractive. A longer or higher-volume program may justify an engineered comparison, but it still has to clear the site, feed, and destination tests.
Treat transport as an operating constraint
The question is not only how far material travels. It is whether trucks, barges, loading points, roads, gates, labor windows, and the receiving destination can keep pace with the dredge. On-site processing can alter the material that moves next; it also adds its own deliveries, footprint, handling, and operating interfaces.
Define each destination before selecting equipment
Water may be retained for a project-defined next step, treated further, or routed only as authorized. Concentrated solids may require sampling, conditioning, staging, transport, further treatment, or an approved destination. The owner, applicable authorities, and receiving party set those requirements; a separation package does not create them.
Price uncertainty explicitly
Unknown feed conditions, undefined water routes, an unconfirmed solids destination, or unclear scope ownership are not minor notes. They are the inputs most likely to make two proposals look comparable when they are not. Mark assumptions, identify the party closing each gap, and price contingency deliberately.
Build a comparable estimate
Put the same cost buckets on both routes.
Use the direct-haul plan as a real baseline and the on-site plan as a complete operating system. Then ask the same question of each option: who performs the work, what must be available, what can interrupt it, and what proves the next handoff is allowed?

The exact train follows the material, the production rate, the site, and the defined outputs. These stages explain the work an on-site scope must actually own.
